Your Monthly German Mini-Lesson
Each month, we introduce a common German word and explain it in English—so you can easily understand it and try using it yourself. Discover new vocabulary, practice your language skills, and add a little German to your everyday life!
This month: Ach so Interjection Pronunciation: [aχ zoː] Definition: A colloquial German expression used to indicate understanding or realization. “Ach so” translates to “Oh, I see” or “Ah, that makes sense” in English. It is often used when someone explains something that clarifies a previous confusion. Examples:
-
A: „Das ist der Grund, warum ich nicht kommen kann.“ (That’s the reason I can’t come.) B: „Ach so!“ (Oh, I see!)
-
A: „Ich habe das Buch schon gelesen.“ (I’ve already read the book.) B: „Ach so, deshalb kennst du die Geschichte.“ (Oh, I see; that’s why you know the story.)
Usage note: “Ach so” can also convey mild surprise or acknowledgment in conversation. It is commonly used in both casual and formal settings
