Knowledge and Expertise: From RWTH, for RWTH, and Beyond
The Open Perspectives Series
The Open Perspectives event series illustrates the impact of learning and applying sustainability expertise. By featuring insights from both high-level research and student-led projects, the series showcases transformative work from within the University and the broader community. What distinguishes Open Perspectives is its intentionally multidisciplinary approach, where experts from diverse fields engage in collaborative dialogue. Participants include RWTH community members, local residents, and a wide range of external stakeholders. The series launched in early 2024 with the theme “Campus as a Resource.” The inaugural event featured Sarah Hermens and Hanna Potulski, who presented their thesis on a “Master Plan for Sustainable Campus Development,” with a focus on carbon neutrality and mixed-use spaces. Additional perspectives were provided by Professor Dirk Müller (Chair of Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate), who outlined a strategic energy concept for Campus Melaten, and Professor Christa Reicher (Chair of Urban Design), who shared best practices in sustainable campus development from Monash University, Melbourne.
The work showcased in this event series is deeply rooted in real-world challenges. These contributions do more than just provide theoretical insights; they offer practical applications that contribute directly to advancing sustainability goals at the University and within the region.
The second installment, “Campus in the Cycle – Planning Processes for Circular Buildings,” was held in November 2024 and centered on resource-efficient and sustainable construction. The session featured Professor Linda Hildebrand, who presented guidelines for circular and energy-optimized research buildings at RWTH. Supplementing this internal expertise, Ursula Feld of the City of Aachen’s Office for Sustainable Construction offered an external perspective on circular economy principles and sustainable building practices.
Open Perspectives contributes to several of RWTH’s sustainability goals. The event series fosters vital dialogue and collaboration across teaching, research, and administration at RWTH. It also creates a forum for broader societal discourse on sustainability, leveraging the University’s research and expertise to address global issues. Critically, the series provides students with a high-profile platform to present their work, encouraging deep engagement with sustainability. As the inaugural event’s subtitle aptly puts it, this is “Knowledge and Expertise: From RWTH, for RWTH, and beyond.”
