Exploring beneath the A7: Fascinating insights into Elbtunnel operations and tunnel construction.
One of Hamburg's largest transportation infrastructure projects was on the agenda for this meeting. Thanks to Christoph Schröder, our visitors toured the construction site for the expansion of the A7 federal highway north of the Elbe Tunnel.
Nineteen alumni gathered in Hamburg-Othmarschen at the Elbe Tunnel complex. First, we got to take a look inside the ventilation building, where the ventilation turbines are located, and we learned just how important this aspect of tunnel operations is. After that, we made our way into the underground catacombs of the operations building, which took us all the way to the very front of the highway overpass. From there, we stood right above the highway, watching the traffic. It was interesting to see people driving their cars from this angle.
The Elbe Tunnel was fascinating, as was our visit inside the operations center. This is because the tunnel systems located further north along the A7 in the Hamburg area and various municipal tunnels are monitored from here. A large video wall displays detailed information about traffic conditions. We received information about more practical matters, including what to do in the event of a fire.
Afterwards, we walked in the early summer heat to the construction site of the noise-reduction tunnel in Altona-Bahrenfeld; this tunnel is over 2 km long. The construction of the highway in the 1970s cut right through this neighborhood. People were no longer willing to accept the noise and disruption of up to 150,000 vehicles per day. For many years, a local initiative campaigned for a tunnel solution. That goal came closer as planning began for the 8-lane expansion of the A7. Conventional noise barriers such as embankments and walls would have struggled to achieve the noise reduction goals. On top of that, widening the highway would have further increased the feeling of separation in the urban landscape. The state of Hamburg is contributing 25% of the construction costs, and the rest is being covered by the Federal Government. This funding means that the tunnel is fast becoming a reality.
We were given hard hats and safety vests, then we headed into the western tunnel. It was pleasantly cool inside, and the structural work is already largely complete in this area. Next, work will begin on upgrading the technical equipment, including the ventilation system. The tunnel will be equipped with jet fans for ventilation - and it will contain transportation and communication facilities. This equipment will initially be required for traffic in both directions. Once the first tunnel has been fully completed, traffic will begin flowing through it, and construction of the eastern tunnel will begin.
The information we received made it abundantly clear just how challenging it is to carry out this project while a busy highway remains in operation - and what’s more, we got an idea of the operational effort required to construct such a complex road tunnel.
We have learned that the planned completion date will be pushed back slightly. This is due to factors such as the recently introduced Kritis requirements, which, for example, mandate redundancy for certain facilities.
Once the tunnel system is completed, the area will take on a new urban character, and this change will doubtless be reflected in the prices of neighboring properties. As with other tunnels north of this project, a park will be built on top of the tunnel.
After the tour ended, some members of the group had to leave. The rest of us enjoyed the evening at the Röperhof restaurant where we reflected on the afternoon’s events.
